ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT


Hamilton Gardens aims to constantly improve sustainable management practices. At present this includes the following:
 
Recycling glass, paper, tin, aluminium, food waste, office supplies and garden compost. Mulch is purchased from the local recycling centre.

Conserving water through night time irrigation, mulching, monitoring and recycling.

Improving energy efficiency through monitoring, insulation and energy efficient technologies.

A Buy Local Policy.

Conserving a valuable area of original bush and on-site cultural features and associations.

Ongoing planting programmes and the propagation and distribution of locally ecosourced NZ plants for restoration work.  
 Promoting sustainable practices through a demonstration sustainable garden and related interpretation material.

Encouraging bird, insect and bat populations through planting, habitat protection and predator control.

Supporting local conservation groups who use Hamilton Gardens facilities through discounted rates.

Reducing chemical controls through integrated management and good husbandry.

Monitoring and managing the area of refuse landfill in accordance with the Reserve Landfill Strategy.

Encouraging on site partners to use sustainable practices.
